Infinite Friday
Before the weekend begins
3 minutes
Some of my favorite moments in football have happened on quiet summer mornings at nearly empty fields with my kids.
The dew is still on the turf. The goals are waiting. The season feels a long way off.
We arrive without much ceremony. Bags open. VisionPlay is set just outside the 18. Balls roll out. Before long, the competitions begin.
Every challenge has a winner. Every winner makes sure the loser knows it. Every loss demands another round.
Some of the fiercest competition I’ve ever watched hasn’t happened on a Saturday afternoon. It’s happened on quiet summer mornings between my son and my daughter. They push each other harder than any opponent ever could.
It’s hard not to feel like the season has already begun.
There is no crowd. No referee. The score lives only in the argument that follows each round.
A touch that sits a little cleaner than last week. A quick glance that turns an invisible teammate into an obvious one. A pause before the ball arrives—then a decision that looks ordinary only because it came a half-second sooner.
Later in the year, when the stands fill and the weekends arrive with their noise, people will talk about composure. About players who seem to have more time. About the ones who look ready.
On those empty fields, the hours pass without an audience.
The same small problems return. The answers come a little differently than they did the week before.
The dew lifts. The goals are still waiting.
Before the weekend begins…
What will everyone see…
and what will no one see?
